Job Summary

Reporting to the Chief Strategy and Communications Officer, the Manager, Communications, leads the Corporate Communication team at Southlake. Core responsibilities include:
1. the development, implementation and evaluation of proactive and reactive media relations strategies
2. Southlake’s digital presence and social media strategy
3. issues management
4. the development and implementation of communications plans (both at the corporate level and for clinical programs)

Lead the Communications team
• Provide day-to-day direction and guidance to the Communications department, including human resources management and coaching/staff development
• Ensure that objectives are met on time and on budget

Provide strategic communications advice
• Provide CEO and Chief Strategy and Communications Officer with strategic media relations advice and proactive issues management support
• Design, implement, and evaluate communications plans using a variety of channels and tactics
• Ensure high-profile initiatives receive effective communications support
• Provide measured evaluation / results / ROI on the success of communications plans

Positioning, promoting and protecting the Southlake brand
• Build and maintain relationships with key media stakeholders locally and provincially
• Drive earned media by successfully pitching stories to local and Toronto-based media
• Identify and mitigate potential impact of negative stories
• Liaise with Patient Relations and clinical directors / physician leadership to proactively address potential patient complaints that may be escalated to the media
• Promote the Southlake brand by telling meaningful stories about the work of the organization, leveraging social media and traditional channels

Lead effective internal communication strategies to ensure alignment to the Strategic Plan and improve employee engagement
• Develop and implement new tactics, including employee newsletters, posters/collateral, and social media campaigns to support staff communication


• Bachelors degree in journalism or public relations
• 10+ years experience in media relations and/or healthcare communications
• Expertise managing complex communications projects in hospitals
• Expertise in working with clinical operations teams to implement communications plans
• Experience working with a broad range of stakeholders, including government, Crown agencies, and other healthcare organizations.
• Advanced knowledge of the healthcare system, role of the Ministry/LHINs/agencies, current strategic priorities of government, and relevant provincial initiatives that impact Southlake
• Superior writing and editing skills
• Demonstrated excellence in communication, both written and verbal
• Demonstrated problem assessment skills
• Demonstrated commitment to customer service and teamwork
• Demonstrated individual leadership skills
