Job Summary

The Charge Nurse is a Registered Nurse (RN) who role models clinical excellence and the core competencies of the practice standards of the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO), as well as the policies and procedures of Southlake Regional Health Centre (Southlake). The Charge Nurse works collaboratively as a member of the interprofessional health care team.

The successful candidate will be motivated, self-directed and a key member of a dynamic interprofessional team with defined roles focused on quality patient care and patient flow. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing excellent care to a diverse acute medical patient population in a fast-paced setting.

The Charge Nurse promotes optimal patient and clinical outcomes by assessing and facilitating effective management of care, supporting, guiding and coaching the front line staff, overseeing admissions and discharges and maintaining a safe work environment. The Chare Nurse will ensure assignments are appropriate using the three factor framework as outline in the College of Nurses of Ontario Standards, RN and RPN Practice: The Client, Nurse and the Environment. These three factors have an impact on decision making related to care-provider assignment as well as the need for consultation and collaboration among care providers.

Primary Responsibilities

• Functions in accordance with established hospital policies and procedures, including emergency codes.
• Collaborates with team (Discharge Nurse, Primary Nurse, and Physician) to optimize patient flow, timely admission and discharge.
• Serves as a clinical resource to staff on the unit to optimize problem solving and has knowledge of clinical resources that may be required. For example (but not limited to), communicating policies & procedures; supporting guidelines and best practices, and assisting with procedures.
• Assume a patient assignmeent when required.
• Communicates effectively with patients, families and all members of the healthcare team.
• Provides consultation and/or clinical support to peers on a daily basis.
• Assess staffing needs for the unit daily (RN, RPN, PSP) and communicate needs with unit leadership team and call Short call for replacement of breaks if needed.
• Supporting front line staff with problem solving, critical thinking/judgment and knowledge transfer; point of time teaching.
• Ensures sustainment of corporate and unit quality initiatives.
• Ensure priority supplies and equipment is checked on a daily basis and facilitate access to missing supplies/equipment.
• Assist with quality huddles and identify opportunities for improvement, daily per unit (aware of unit priority metrics and supports the Five Patient Safety Priorities).
• Bring order and organization to the unit (e.g. ensure hallways have a clear path to walk and fire doors are not obstructed, nursing station and patient areas clean, tidy, avoid clutter).
• Encouraging/Supporting team to take timely breaks and facilitating assignment.
• Assists in the orientation/preceptorship of new staff members and students to the clinical units.
• Acts as a role model and champion to identify and integrate safe, best practices into daily activities to foster the delivery of safe and exemplary care.
• Appropriately escalates staff and patient concerns to the manager.
• Communicate potential quality and safety concerns to the oncoming team at shift change.
• Support staff during codes.
• Takes a leadership role in the coordination of patient care in assigned area.
• Assists in the orientation/preceptorship of new staff members and students.
• Engaged in corporate quality initiatives.
• Effectively utilizes human and material resources.


• RN Certificate of Registration from the College of Nurses of Ontario
• BScN preferred
• Minimum of 5 years recent acute care experience required
• Charge Nurse experience required

As a condition of employment, you are required to submit proof of COVID-19 vaccination to the Hospital’s Occupational Health and Safety department. Successful candidates will be required to submit proof of COVID-19 vaccination (two doses) from the Ontario Ministry of Health website or other authorized source directly to the Occupational Health and Safety department.
